FreeStyle Libre*, the flash glucose monitoring device to help people with Type 1 diabetes monitor their own glucose levels using a sensor the size of a two pound coin, is now available on prescription for people in North West London with Type 1 diabetes that meet the criteria.
Since 1 May 2018, residents of North West London with Type 1 diabetes who are aged four years or over, are eligible to receive FreeStyleLibre on NHS prescription as long as they understand the basic principles of insulin dose adjustment; know how to appropriately manage their glucose levels; and fulfil at least one of the following criteria:
1. Have Type 1 diabetes, test frequently and can reduce strip usage by eight strips a day by using the FreeStyle Libre system
2. Have Type 1 diabetes with HbA1c >8.5% (69.4mmol/mol) or disabling hypoglycaemia (low glucose levels) and are eligible for insulin pump therapy
3. Have Type 1 diabetes, are administering multiple daily injections or on insulin pump therapy where monitoring of glucose levels is not possible with finger-prick devices.
NHS North West London Collaboration of CCGs had issued an interim position statement in October 2017 asking primary care prescribers not to prescribe FreeStyle Libre sensors until an evaluation had been undertaken to establish eligibility criteria for NHS prescribing. NHS London Procurement Partnership together with NHS London Clinical Networks have now completed the evaluation of FreeStyle Libre and issued prescribing guidance on behalf of London clinical commissioning groups. NHS North West London Collaboration of CCGs have adopted this prescribing guidance. More information about the guidance as well as frequently asked questions can be found here .
The patient’s local diabetes specialist team will decide on their eligibility at their next routine appointment.
People with Type 1 diabetes, not currently under the care of a local diabetes specialist team, can discuss with their GP whether they should be referred for an eligibility assessment at a specialist centre.
