Ealing CCG and Ealing council to host national webinar on Ealing response to rising prevalence of musculoskeletal ill-health

Ealing CCG and Ealing Council are to host a national webinar to explain how they have worked together to develop the local response to the high and rising prevalence of poor health due to musculoskeletal disorders in the borough and the services that are needed to help patients.

The Ealing Musculoskeletal (MSk) Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) Chapter is an exemplar that forms a template for all local authorities in England.  The 2014 chapter was widely acclaimed, and the 2017 chapter ‘Focus on’ style was welcomed at a recent ARMA national conference.  NHS England and ARMA both want to promote musculoskeletal health as it has been a Cinderella disease, eclipsed by cancer, CHD, diabetes and mental health, yet:

  • People live with painful musculoskeletal disorders for more years of their lives than any other condition
  • 3rd highest cause of NHS expenditure after mental health and ‘other’ illnesses
  • 2nd highest cause of loss of productivity in the workforce after minor illness
  • Increasing physical activity at all ages has the strongest cost-effectiveness evidence and return on investment for  primary, secondary and tertiary prevention

Dr Ian Bernstein, MSk lead at Ealing CCG, said: “MSK accounts for £4.76 billion of NHS spending each year and 1 in 5 patients see their GPs each year for a musculoskeletal condition, accounting for 14% of all consultations. NHS England want us to explain how we drafted the JSNA chapter, and how it is being implemented locally as a way of spreading best practice nationwide.

This webinar will be of interest to Directors of Public Health, senior policy makers, STP and CCGs leads,  health and social care commissioners, Health and wellbeing Boards, providers tendering for services and patient groups. Please register to join.
